2 Week Orientation Programming

Your foundation for life and study in Paris (Mandatory – First Two Weeks)

The Orientation Program is the required entry point to the CUPA experience and allows students to meet CUPA staff and their fellow students while gaining early insight into the French academic mindset.

These first two weeks are designed with “firsts” in mind – living in Paris, studying entirely in French, and adjusting to a new academic culture. These experiences can be exciting, but also a source of stress, which Orientation is designed to ease through structure and support.

Orientation includes guided academic preparation, cultural integration, and social programming. CUPA organizes events such as a Franco-American Soirée and group lunches that help students build community and meet both CUPA peers and French students.

Students are introduced to French university and CUPA course expectations, including how to approach the commentaire composé and dissertation, and how to navigate the nuances of the problématique. CUPA also holds meetings on course selection, practical information, extracurricular activities, and adapting to life in Paris.

To broaden the experience beyond Paris, students and staff also take a day trip to a city or monument of historical significance. France is not limited to Paris, and this excursion offers students an early sense of the country’s cultural and regional diversity.

French Language Center

The CUPA French Language Center is a structured support system designed to accompany students throughout their semester in Paris. It begins during Orientation and continues with individualized weekly support tailored to each student’s academic and personal goals.

During Orientation, each student meets with CUPA’s FLE (Français Langue Étrangère) faculty for a conversation in French. This exchange helps assess current language levels, identify areas for improvement, and understand each student’s interests. From this, the FLE team designs a plan individuel to guide their linguistic and cultural progression for the semester.

Students are then placed into a structured support model that includes 30-minute weekly tutoring sessions, designed around their academic courses and personal interests. These sessions evolve alongside the student’s progress and immersion experience.

B1 students: strongly encouraged to participate weekly
B2+ students: may opt into weekly sessions based on individual goals

The French Language Center offers multiple forms of support:

One-on-one tutoring tailored to linguistic and cultural needs
Semester-long projects linked to academic and personal interests
Proofreading of academic assignments
Training for class presentations
Weekly informal ateliers thématiques led by a French university student intern

These workshops and sessions may include activities such as maintaining a personal journal, recording a podcast, or analyzing French stand-up comedy. Recent ateliers thématiques have also featured board games, ciné-club film discussions, and conversations around current events using newspapers and magazines.

This approach ensures that French learning remains dynamic, applied, and closely connected to students’ lived experience in Paris.

MÉTHODOLOGIE UNIVERSITAIRE FRANÇAISE

Understanding how French academic thinking works:

Methodology training helps students master an academic approach that can be quite different from what American students are used to. It deepens their understanding of French academic culture and expectations while strengthening analytical and writing skills.

Throughout the semester, students can sign up for appointments to meet with CUPA’s methodology professors to receive individualized support for specific assignments.

Students learn how to approach key academic forms such as:

Pre-Departure Visa Support

Navigating the French visa process is a required part of preparing to study in France. CUPA provides structured pre-departure support, including mandatory visa information sessions for all admitted students.

These sessions ensure students understand timelines, documentation requirements, and consular procedures before beginning the application process.

Important Visa Requirements

All Non-EU students must obtain a long-stay student visa before departure
Applications must be completed in the student’s country of residence
The process takes approximately 8-10 weeks or more
Visa applications cannot be completed after arriving in France

Students receive detailed instructions only after formal admission and receipt of required CUPA documentation. CUPA holds mandatory pre-departure visa sessions for all admitted students. These sessions are designed to ensure every student is fully prepared, avoids delays, and completes the process correctly and on time.
