SUMMARY:Day Trip to Auvers-sur-Oise
DESCRIPTION:With CUPA\, students took a day trip to Auvers-sur-Oise to discover a quaint and historically rich town\, a short hour northwest of Paris. The town is known for its history with impressionist artists\, most notably Vincent van Gogh. \nWe started with a guided tour that uncovered van Gogh’s various inspirations for some of his later work\, including L’Église d’Auvers-sur-Oise and Champs de blé sous les nuages. \nFor lunch\, students enjoyed various dishes\, such as dos de cabillaud\, pavé de veau\, tartare de saumon\, tataki de boeuf\, with a glass of wine\, dessert\, and a warm drink to digest the meal. \nStudents then had a few hours free to explore Auvers—armed with a few CUPA suggestions: van Gogh’s house\, the town castle\, the Absinthe museum\, a walking path through nature—before taking the train back home to Paris. \nStudents may read about Vincent van Gogh and other impressionist artists in class; they may see the paintings in various Parisian museums\, but experiencing firsthand the landscape and environment that inspired such art is truly a moving experience our students thoroughly enjoyed.

DESCRIPTION:Each Tuesday\, our Video Club meets to watch a short film together and discuss (with some snacks of course)! This activity is meant to be low pressure— simply another space for students to practice understanding and speaking French while discovering French and Francophone cinema. \nThe first meeting’s theme was love\, where we watched the animation “Les belles cicatrices” by Raphaël Jouzeau. The film is part of the 2024 Cannes Festival selection. \nThe students discussed the meaning of the title\, the changing emotions of the film\, as well as how the animations symbolized a greater message. Students also discussed the differing cultures of alcohol in France versus the United States. \nOur Video Club mixes culture\, language\, opinion\, and expression to encourage students in their growing vocabulary.

DESCRIPTION:C’est l’enchantement et la variété de véritables “paysages musicaux” que déploie ce concert : soleil prismatique du matin avec Moussorgski\, immenses terres désolées avec Sibelius\, nature puissante et allégorique avec Wagner. \nPièce d’orchestre scintillante\, d’une infinie délicatesse\, le Prélude de La Khovanchtchina se garde d’annoncer les conflits spirituels et politiques qui sont au coeur de l’opéra posthume de Moussorgski. Parfois rebaptisée “Matin sur la Moskova”\, c’est un crescendo continu et irisé\, dont la lumière épique est toutefois tamisée\, à l’horizon\, par des cloches aux accents funèbres. \nChères aux écrivains romantiques\, l’idée d’un “paysage musical” n’est pas moins présente dans Tapiola\, dernière grande pièce symphonique de Sibelius. Demeure du roi des forêts dans Kalevala\, le domaine de Tapio magnifie une nature grnadiose et farouche\, si désolée que l’homme en semble absent. Bâtie sur un thème unique magnifiquement variée\, l’oeuvre se teinte d’âtres dissonances\, tel un legs à la modernité du dernier Sibelius. \nEntre puissance et magie\, comment ne pas succomber\, enfin\, à l’Actre I de La Walkyrie ? Dans un climat initiatique\, la fureur des éléments et l’appel héroïque y rivalise avec la fatalité de l’union incestueuse. Il n’est rien d’étonnant\, face à une telle cosmogonie et à une telle musique\, que tant d’écrivains\, dont le Thomas Mann de Sang réservé\, n’aient succombé à l’appel de “l’Enchanteur”.
