DESCRIPTION:Ancré dans la tradition liturgique et laboratoire d’une musique avant-gardiste soucieuse de séduire\, le Requiem de Litegi est une oeuvre phrase du vingtième siècle\, à laquelle succède le mysticisme médiéval de la Quatrième symphonie de Bruckner. \nAvec son somptueux Requiem\, composé entre 1963 et 1965\, György Ligeti met tout son art au service d’une exploration de la tradition polyphonique\, dans le cadre d’une réflexion avant-gardiste sur le devenir de la musique. Conservés mais réinventés\, les codes compositionnels propres à la messe des morts\, comme la fugue pour le Kyrie ou l’intensité dramatique pour le Dies Irae\, s’intègrent à un langage plein de contrastes\, auquel sa radicalité\, bien réelle\, n’ôte jamais son pouvoir de séduction. \nCette atmosphère mystique ne s’estompe certes pas avec la Quatrième Symphonie que Bruckner nomma lui-même “Romantique”\, caractérisée par son inspiration liturgique et médiévale\, comme témoignent des mentions figurant sur le manuscrit : “Cité médiévale”\, “appels à l’aube depuis les tours”\, “Chevalier se lançant au dehors sur leurs destriers” ou encore “Dans pour le repas de la chasse”. De structure cyclique\, cette partition complexe offre un rôle singulier au cors\, déployant au fil de ses quatre mouvements des passages mystérieux\, épiques\, voire frénétiques avec le Scherzo\, non sans offrir\, parfois\, ces instants d’introspection qui témoignent\, chez Bruckner\, de l’influence de Schubert.

Gaëlle Bourges\, n’a pas son égal pour nous faire (re)découvrir\, toujours sous un jour surprenant\, les références de l’histoire de l’art. \nElle nous amène cette fois au XVe siècle\, à partir d’un coffre de mariage qui attira son attention au musée des Beaux-arts de Tours. \nLe bel objet illustre l’histoire de Camille\, guerrière dont le sort est rapporté dans l’Énéide de Virgile et puis au XIVe siècle\, chez Boccace. \nL’Amazone meurt au combat et le poète avise les femmes à ne pas chercher la bagarre ! \nGaëlle Bourges\, cependant\, n’entend pas suivre les voies moralistes et relit l’histoire de Camille comme une métaphore des luttes féministes à toutes les époques. \nRemarquables poètes du geste\, les huit interprètes marionnettistes invitent à un voyage dans l’histoire et le temps\, avec autant d’humour que de sens du drame.

Se vengera-t-elle d’Albrecht en l’entraînant dans la mort ou fera-t-elle triompher l’amour et le pardon ? \nCréé en 1841 à l’Académie royale de Musique – ancêtre de l’Opéra de Paris -\, ce ballet de Jules Perrot et Jean Coralli – ici adapté par Patrice Bart et Eugène Polyakov – a ouvert une nouvelle esthétique dans l’histoire de la danse occidentale. \nChaussons de pointes\, arabesques et longs tutus blancs contribuent à évoquer un univers fantastique et diaphane\, devenu l’incarnation même du romantisme.

DESCRIPTION:En 2017\, Denis Podalydès ouvrait la saison avec “Les Fourberies de Scapin”\, un spectacle qui n’a pas cessé d’être joué depuis un succès non démenti. Accueil triomphal donc pour cette “pièce de trouve\, écrite non pas pour la Cour mais pour le peuple”\, créée en 1671 au Palais-Royal pendant une période de travaux. Molière souhaite alors se libérer des contraintes des comédies-ballets et des comédies à machines et revient au “théâtre pur”\, offrant au metteur en scène d’aujourd’hui une grande liberté d’action. \nIci\, la scène se passe à Naples\, porte ouverte à l’imaginaire maritime\, tendu vers l’Orient. Dans un décor évoquant le port de la ville\, deux fils aux amours contrariées\, confrontés à deux pères autoritaires\, s’en remettent au rusé Scapin\, habité d’une folle énergie de revanche. Double de Scaramouche\, l’acteur italien à la vie aventureuse fascinait Molière. “À vous dire la vérité\, il y a peu de choses qui me soient impossibles\, quand je m’en veut mêler” déclare le valet bouffon dont le nom\, comme le rappelle Denis Polyadès\, vient du verbe italien scappare qui signifie “s’échapper”\, “s’envoler”. S’il reçoit des coups de bâton\, il en rend tout autant et déploie\, dans un climat de demande de rançon et de contrariétés paternelles\, une avalanche de stratagèmes et autres fourberies que l’auteur excellait à peindre.

SUMMARY:Weekend Trip to Épernay and Reims
DESCRIPTION:Every semester\, we take a weekend trip to visit another region in France. This past weekend\, we took the train to Épernay in the Champagne region where we visited the Mercier cellars\, their vineyards\, and of course tasted some champagne. \nAfter an afternoon under the Épernay sun\, we took the next train for Reims\, where we had a delicious dinner in the center of the city. We ate garlic buttered escargots\, magret de canard\, fish\, seasonal vegetables\, and crème brûlée ! \nSunday morning we had time to freely explore the city and cheer on the runners of the marathon taking place before having a local lunch. We then visited the Notre-Dame cathedral of Reims — bigger than the one in paris —and learned of the historical importance of the city. \nWhile many students travel throughout their CUPA semester\, not many have the chance to explore smaller French cities or towns\, which offer an indispensable perspective on French culture and life outside of Paris. Our weekend and day trips allow students to travel differently and are some of the biggest highlights of the semester !

SUMMARY:Pascal Dusapin - Antigone
DESCRIPTION:Figure magnétique de la musique de notre temps\, Pascal Dusapin donne un nouveau témoignage de sa fascination pour l’Antiquité avec l'”opératorio” Antigone\, serti\, pour cette création mondiale\, dans l’écrin scénique que lui offre Netia Jones. \nPersonnage de tragédie incarnant la force d’une piété archaïque contre la loi des hommes\, Antigone est devenue\, on le sait\, une héroïne chérie des Modernes : en France\, Cocteau et Anouilh en ont fait le symbole même de la résistance\, avant que le féminisme ne l’intronise en figure de lutte contre l’oppression patriarcale. \nC’est dire si ce personnage fascinant avait de quoi tenter Pascal Dusapin\, qui a démontré\, avec oeuvres consacrées à Médée et à Penthésilée\, son intérêt pour les grandes hérpïnes de la mythologie. Compositeur de la musique mais aussi du livret\, il a choisi\, pour cet “Opératorio” contemporain\, de s’appuyer sur la version classique de Sophocle telle qu’elle fut traduite\, en allemand\, par Freidrich Hölderlin. Un fil se tisse ainsi\, de la tragédie antique à la musique la plus actuelle\, qui passe par le romantisme allemand\, et c’est de cette synthèse\, très personnelle\, que naît la force singulière de l’oeuvre. \nLa mise en scène de Netia Jones\, incluant un dispositif vidéo\, magnifie les moments forts de la partition\, tels que le monologue “Oh mir !”\, et soutient magistralement une partition constamment expressive\, sous haute pression.

DESCRIPTION:This week\, we watched the short animation “Gigi” by Cynthia Calvi\, following the interests of our students in experimental and queer films. The animation is narrated by Calvi\, where she discusses and describes her young life navigating her trans identity. \nStudents compared this animation to the first animation we saw\, “Les belles cicatrices\,” for its symbolism and style. \nWe also exchanged tips on where to go to the cinema in Paris\, how to find affordable or free screenings\, and ideas for future Video Club themes.

SUMMARY:La Bohème
DESCRIPTION:Avant de se voir en haut de l’affiche\, combien d’artistes ont connu la misère ? L’écrivain Henri Murger sait de quoi il parle lorsqu’il rédige ses Scènes de la vie de bohème\, chronique d’une jeunesse qui peint des toiles ou trousse des vers dans d’humbles mansardes en attendant la gloire. \nMais la jeunesse\, aussi pauvre soit-elle\, n’a qu’un temps : Giacomo Puccini en a bien conscience\, qui\, en adaptant le roman de Murger\, offre à son opéra La Bohème\, créé en 1896\, une musique poignante\, débordant de nostalgie. En embellissant le passé\, il donne d’autant plus de prix – celui de l’éphémère – aux amours du poète Rodolphe et de la grisette Mimi. \nCette nostalgie est précisément au coeur de la mise en scène de Claus Guth qui situe les personnages dans l’espace\, comme pour mieux révéler la distance qui nous sépare des souvenirs.
