DESCRIPTION:Every semester we take a weekend trip to a different region of France. For this summer’s session\, we explore the Normandie region! We arrived in Caen\, visited the Mémorial de Caen and learned traditional lacemaking. In the evening\, we shared a wonderful meal at the Château de Caen. On Saturday\, we visited Sword Beach and learned about D-Day\, before enjoying the sun and a meal shared at La Voile Blanche.

DESCRIPTION:Portée par Shakespeare au rang de mythe\, l’histoire de Roméo et Juliette dut attendre le XXe siècle avant de s’incarner en ballet grâce à la musique de Sergueï Prokofiev\, en 1935. \nDans la production créée pour le Ballet de l’Opéra national de Paris en 1984\, Rudolf Noureev s’empare de cette partition brillante et énergique pour proposer une version fastueuse\, particulièrement cinématographique. \nSa chorégraphie s’attache à montrer la mue du jeune Roméo en homme grâce à une Juliette passionnée qui entre tragiquement dans l’âge adulte. \nScènes de bals\, provocations juvéniles et duels dans une Renaissance italienne magnifiquement reconstituées permettent de donner corps\, relief et puissance à la passion des amants de Vérone en prise avec les haines ancestrales de leurs familles.

DESCRIPTION:Encadré par la précision quasi-picturale de Strauss et le souffle exaltant de Sibelius\, le diabolique Deuxième Concerto de Bartók crépite sous l’archet de Renaud Capuçon ! \nInspiré de poèmes inachevés de Nikolaus Lenau\, Don Juan est un poème symphonique qui témoigne des dons prodigieux du jeune Strauss. Le caractère ombrageux et épique de l’Hidalgo\, mais aussi la volupté et la séduction qui l’accompagnent\, sont rendus par un langage orchestral d’une prodigieuse virtuosité\, entre jeux d’ombre et fulgurante énergie. \nPièce maîtresse du répertoire violonistique\, le Deuxième Concerto de Bartók fut pour sa part composé par Zoltán Székely à partir d’août 1937. Malgré sa forme classique en trois mouvements\, il obéit entièrement à un principe de variation\, exigeant de l’interprète  des prouesses en apparence contradictoires : fusionner avec un orchestre dont l’écriture possède une densité symphonique\, et rendre en même temps justice à une partie soliste d’une effrayante virtuosité\, dont l’expressionnisme\, allant jusqu’à la violence\, exige un engagement absolu. \nGorgée d’une énergie lyrique galvanisante\, qui la fit souvent qualifier de “cosmique”\, la Cinquième Symphonie de Sibelius marque l’entrée du compositeur dans la maturité. Elle se compose de trois mouvements\, dont le dernier comprend le thème dit de “l’appel du cygne”\, plus tard cité par Leonard Bernstein ou John Coltrane.

Et\, dans les années 1970\, lieu d’un Festival des arts ouvert à l’avant-garde. Le chorégraphe Armin Hokmi s’inspire de ce rendez-vous entre les continents pour inventer une danse\, à la fois contemporaine\, personnelle et intimiste. Armin Hokmi\, Iranien né à Booshehr\, aujourd’hui établi à Berlin et Oslo\, a fait la surprise du Festival Montpellier Danse 2024 avec ce ballet hypnotique\, fruit d’changes entre les sept interprètes internationaux\, issus de traditions différentes. Hommage à l’esprit vibrant de ce festival mythique\, la pièce est un pont entre les cultures\, s’affranchissant de l’histoire\, de l’espace et du temps pour faire vivre une intense expérience poétique.

À travers eux\, il commença à sentir que sa propre nature amoureuse ne correspondait pas aux stéréotypes hétéronormés. Le geste précis et le verbe pointu\, le coeur grand comme ça et le corps pétillant\, il raconte ici ses envies et badine avec l’amour\, en faisant boumer les couples. Les questions qu’il pose aux interprètes entraînent des réponses incongrues et drôles. Lançant des clins d’oeil à l’histoire de la danse\, il amuse son public en démasquant les manipulations conscientes et inconscientes dans nos opéras\, ballets\, chansons cultes et bien sûr dans Dirty Dancing.

DESCRIPTION:For our semester weekend trip\, we traveled to Colmar and Strasbourg. In Colmar\, a guide accompanied us around town and showed us the beautiful Alsatian architecture rooted in French and German history. After a full afternoon\, we took the train to Strasbourg and enjoyed the sunset before sharing a typical meal from the region: choucroute and flammkuchen ! \nThe next morning\, we enjoyed a sun-filled boat ride around the canals\, taking us to the European Parlement and through various neighborhoods. To end the weekend\, we had a wonderful lunch before catching the train back to Paris !

Surmontant sa réserve\, elle lui écrit une lettre d’amour passionnée. \nLas ! il lui oppose un refus brutal doublé d’une leçon de morale. Pourtant\, un duel et des années plus tard\, il tombera amoureux de la jeune femme devenue l’épouse du prince Grémine. Cèdera-t-elle à ses avances ? \nPassionné par la culture russe et sensible à l’intensité dramatique de la musique de Tchaïkovski\, Ralph Fiennes signe sa première mise en scène lyrique. S’il assume le choix d’une simplicité picturale pour évoquer la campagne russe ou une salle de bal\, c’est pour mieux faire ressortir les émotions des personnages\, aussi complexes que modernes.

Au moment où l’âge allait la contraindre d’abandonner ce solo devenu un compagnon de vie\, le Théâtre de la Ville lui propose d’imagine un BACH en famille\, en compagnie de Pep Ramis\, son conjoint\, lui-même artiste et chorégraphe\, et leurs trois enfants Martí\, Paula et Sam\, tous devenus artistes professionnels. Pour couronner un parcours impressionnant\, une oeuvre qui se confond avec la vie.

SUMMARY:Ludwig van Beethoven - Missa solemnis
DESCRIPTION:Monument tardif de Beethoven\, l’imposante Missa solemnis est sans doute la partition qui coûta le plus d’efforts au “grand sourd” : travail opiniâtre et passionné\, pour une oeuvre qui\, au-delà de son sens liturgique\, est un hymne de paix universel. \nComposée entre 1818 et 1823\, la Missa solemnis appartient au corpus retreint des oeuvres du “dernier Beethoven”\, et constitue sans conteste son chef-d’oeuvre liturgique. Dédiée à l’archiduc Rodolphe\, qui en était le commanditaire\, cette partition hors normales est cependant caractéristique du fait que l’ambition beethovénienne\, loins de se soumettre à un genre\, créé ses propres cadres. \nVincent d’Indy ne s’y d’ailleurs trompa pas\, qui écrivit : “Cet art admirable ne serait sûrement pas à sa place dans l’église”. Ainsi\, même s’il adopte le plan traditionnel Kyrie\, Gloria\, Credo\, Sanctus\, Benedictus et Agnus Dei\, Beethoven mêle sans cesse le style sacré avec une dramaturgie symphonique\, obtenant un clair-obscur unique. Attentif à chaque mot du texte\, il en souligne le sens à l’aide d’un figuralisme puissant\, telle la sublime montée ascendante du violon dans le Benedictus. Sublime prière de paix\, l’Agnus Dei oppose l’éclat des trompettes à la douceur vocale\, tandis qu’il couronne de fugues le Gloria et le Credo. Car\, ainsi que le souligne Thomas Mann dans Le Docteur Faustus\, l’ombre tutélaire de Bach plane sur une oeuvre qui n’en demeure pas moins à la fois très personnelle et absolument universelle.

SUMMARY:Provins Day Trip
DESCRIPTION:Every semester\, we take a day trip at the end of orientation. It’s a perfect way for students to spend time together outside of CUPA and explore a nearby French town or city. \nThis semester we visited Provins\, where we went on a guided tour of the medieval city. Provins has an incredible history as a central city of French commerce and trade. We were able to see the remaining medieval architecture\, church\, and prison\, as well learn about the various communities who lived there. \nAfter our tour\, we had a delicious lunch at Vieux Remparts\, where students ate typically French meals\, such as magret de canard\, bavette d’aloyau\, suprême de poulet\, banane rôtie\, and eclair.  \nAfter a few hours of free time to explore the city\, we all headed back to Paris before the evening fell. Another splendid trip !

DESCRIPTION:Second day of orientation brings us to the Seine\, where we went on an afternoon cruise. As most students are experiencing Paris for the first time\, the cruise allows them to see the big landmarks\, such as the Tour Eiffel\, Concorde\, le Louvre\, and Notre Dame to name a few. \nWe also saw an agriculture protest near l’Assemblée Nationale\, where enormous tractors lined the streets. Welcome to France !

DESCRIPTION:Alice\, our FLE coordinator and phonology teacher\, will take her class and any other interested students on an afternoon trip to the French language museum in Villers-Cotterêts. The new museum\, hosted in a 500 year old castle\, offers an extensive study of the French language\, its history\, evolution\, and use as a tool of colonisation.
