DESCRIPTION:This week\, we watched the short animation “Gigi” by Cynthia Calvi\, following the interests of our students in experimental and queer films. The animation is narrated by Calvi\, where she discusses and describes her young life navigating her trans identity. \nStudents compared this animation to the first animation we saw\, “Les belles cicatrices\,” for its symbolism and style. \nWe also exchanged tips on where to go to the cinema in Paris\, how to find affordable or free screenings\, and ideas for future Video Club themes.

DESCRIPTION:Back again for our weekly Video Club ! \nThis week\, we watched the short film “Les Misérables” by Ladj Ly\, which was also adapted as a long format film in 2019\, gaining high acclaim. Students discussed police violence\, l’état d’urgence\, and criminality. Students shared personal experiences\, historical references\, and observations they have made during their time in France.

DESCRIPTION:Each Tuesday\, our Video Club meets to watch a short film together and discuss (with some snacks of course)! This activity is meant to be low pressure— simply another space for students to practice understanding and speaking French while discovering French and Francophone cinema. \nThe first meeting’s theme was love\, where we watched the animation “Les belles cicatrices” by Raphaël Jouzeau. The film is part of the 2024 Cannes Festival selection. \nThe students discussed the meaning of the title\, the changing emotions of the film\, as well as how the animations symbolized a greater message. Students also discussed the differing cultures of alcohol in France versus the United States. \nOur Video Club mixes culture\, language\, opinion\, and expression to encourage students in their growing vocabulary.
