Course Selection Process

French universities do not publish course bulletins similar to those of American colleges, which makes it difficult for students to decide upon a final program of study before the start of the semester. Therefore, advising takes place on-site, once the student has been introduced to the French University system and environment, and allows for a broad selection of courses.

At the end of each academic year, CUPA publishes a Course Description Booklet (.pdf format) which concisely describes each course taken by CUPA students during the just-ended academic year. This booklet helps students ascertain the type of courses they will be able to take. Please note that this booklet is not a course catalogue. It provides descriptions for the courses taken by CUPA students during 2013-2014 (courses preceded by an asterisk) and the most popular courses taken over recent years. A course listed in this booklet may not be offered each semester.

During the orientation period, CUPA provides students with a Course Offerings list, which compiles and organizes all the information that can be gathered in advance from the various departments at the universities, in order to facilitate course selection. An extensive file of student evaluations for courses already taken can also be consulted.

While actively encouraging students’ academic independence by offering an extensive choice of courses, CUPA provides individual guidance to students according to their level of fluency, academic background, degree of motivation, special interests and strengths.

Once the student’s final selection of courses is established, CUPA completes the formal registration process with each university.
