CUPA stands for “Center for University Programs Abroad”. It is a study abroad program in Paris. Students can study in Paris for the whole academic year, fall semester or spring semester. CUPA also offers an intensive summer program.
CUPA is a program for undergraduates at American colleges and universities. Graduate students may also apply, but credit toward a graduate degree is not guaranteed.
CUPA requires an advanced level in French since students are directly matriculated at the universities in Paris, and genuine motivation for a serious study abroad program.
Advanced French, History, Art History, Literature, Linguistics, Comparative Literature, Political Science, Economics, International Relations, Gender Studies, Sociology, Psychology, Anthropology, Ethnology, Theology, Theater, Film Studies, Music, Art, Architecture, Dance, Science, Other Foreign Languages…
Students are enrolled via CUPA at numerous Parisian universities and institutes all across the city of Paris. They are directly matriculated and do the saw coursework as their French peers. CUPA also offers a few in-house courses, but does net require students to take them if they prefer to be fully immersed in the French university system.
The CUPA staff is extremely attentive to each student’s specific needs and provides as much support as necessary to resolve any problems that may arise concerning health, studies, logistics or general well-being. Academically and linguistically, CUPA students receive ongoing mentoring and support in keeping with their specific objectives, which helps them create the most fulfilling experience possible.
On a more personal level, CUPA students are free to choose their own level of independence as all program-sponsored activities and in-house courses are optional, but the staff is always available to address any type of question or problem, and students can contact staff members outside of office hours in case of an emergency.
CUPA has considerable experience dealing with any type of difficulties that may arise. Because of the intimate size of the program and its high staff/student ratio, the CUPA team is able to get to know each student individually, and is always available to help work out academic and personal issues.
CUPA allows students to choose between a homestay with a French family and independent living arrangements. CUPA strongly encourages homestays because they provide the student with an opportunity to establish personal relationships, use French intensively and be immersed in French culture and traditions on a daily basis. Independent housing, however, can be a good option for students who prefer to have their own space and value their independence.
Students generally take four courses per semester, each course carrying a credit recommendation for a full semester. CUPA transcripts are accepted by most US institutions. However, should the need arise, a School of Record transcript is available upon request.
CUPA SUMMER is an immersion program in Paris providing intensive work in French language, a selection of content courses and abundant opportunities for significant contact with the French language and culture. The program is open to undergraduate or graduate students with previous background in French and strong motivation to engage in a challenging summer program. Each course carries 60 contact hours, for a total of 120 contact hours, ie 2 full semester credit-bearing courses.
Financial aid from your college or university usually applies for study abroad on the CUPA program. Check with your home institution to find out about their specific financial aid policy. CUPA also offers awards each semester/summer to exceptionally motivated students participating in the CUPA program. These awards are to help the recipients finance special academic or personal projects related to their year, semester or summer in France.
